My Almighty Right Thumb

I am having this weird dilemma. What has happened is that earlier this year I went and saw Danny Schmidt play and began a flirtation with finger picking. It was hard. Now it is so natural, it's hard to play my old songs, which were all played with a pick the approximate thickness of the OED. I have some developed some stylistic oddities I am liking, but can get confusing. Like my right thumb. Traditionally, one would play the three low strings with the thumb, and the three high strings with the index and/or 'bad' finger....My thumb just gets crazy sometimes and plays way beyond it's zone...which leads to cool effects. It also leads to some volume/attack issues, as my thumb can do a real number on a .024 string. Craziness.
